Get-under-the-bar-faster

Snatch

The snatch is very technical. If you read the post on cleans and jerks you understand the need for a coach. In no lift is this more important than the snatch. The snatch goes from the platform to overhead in one swift movement. Squats, deadlifts, bench presses, cleans, and jerks all benefit from a coach’s guidance. The snatch is as technical as the swing of a golf club, with a much heavier weight. Timing and stability are vital to the success of a snatch. For those beginning a snatch workout my advice is simple, do overhead squats, snatch grip deadlifts, and pulls with a weight you can power snatch.

The finish of the pull is the most explosive part of a clean. The squat under immediately following this explosion is the second most explosive part on the clean. This relationship reverses on the snatch. The most explosive part of a snatch is the squat under. The second most important explosion, on a snatch, is the finish of the pull. These lifts are so fundamental to life movements that we must practice them daily. Ask any skateboarder/surfer about the importance of stability in the squat position.

Look at the sequence photo here. You have three frames of the time-frame at the finish of the pull and then he is fully under the bar in less than one frame. The camera did not change shutter speed. Do the math. My father was a lawyer. He taught my brother a lesson when he was in law school. He told him “do the math first”!

If you are waiting to do your math have fun with the less elegant medals you will take? Slipping on the ice. What do you think is the most important thing we need to do while slipping? Gain control/balance on the way down. Even if we fall we are closer to the ground when we have given up on regaining balance. This movement helps this situation among others.
