Squats are a full body athletic movement that help drive muscular growth in the legs and everything else. The leg press is an exercise which feeds the squat. If your knees and back hurt from squatting you are doing them WRONG! Seek the guidance of a qualified coach. If your hips tilt during a leg press you will hurt your back. Form is everything. Body part training is accessory work.
Put your head on the pad while doing leg press! Alignment is form and form is very, very, important.
