Struggle
I have been away from this blog for too long. I am in one of
those places in life when the product of all my hard work is not measurable. I
had fallen and was thinking of not getting up. Those I trusted are unavailable.
Those I depended on are not there (with only a few exceptions). I see now that I
have options. I see that there are good people in the world. I looked for a
friend and several showed up for me. I will always be grateful to them. There is
hope. The bottom line is simple; life is hard. Keep going.
Life is hard. We must struggle if we want to get to our goal.
Training has been my metric for all of life’s difficulties. It is a great tool
to teach us how to work our asses off to get more than we have. Have you ever
been stuck at a point in the squat? Most have not. Let me tell you it is as
tough a place as any in life to find your faith, belief, strength, or constitution
and get out of it. Granted it only lasts a few milliseconds. Stuck at the
bottom of a squat your life is in danger if you are strong. If you are proud
and did not ask for a spotter, of five, your life is literally in danger. Keep focused.
Look to your goal. As Tony Robbins says “a decision involves action”. Make the
adjustment or bail and fix it the next time you squat that weight. The goals,
and video for the squat, will tell you what must be done.
There are multitudes of quotes designed that help people get
out of tough spots. “That which does not k…”, “When the going gets tough…”, “shake
it off”, and the list goes on. We all need these thoughts when we lose focus on
our goal. Losing focus on a goal is like being blind, all respect due, and we
must see to continue down our path. This is the time for enlightenment. If you
want to be rich work hard. If you want to be strong lift weights. If you want
to get a better job learn to speak the language of those who will help you. Life
is a struggle no matter who you are. We all believe there are those out there
who have been given their success. Maybe there are and maybe there are not? I do
not care. The thing I want is up to me and me alone. No one will help me make
someone else strong every day of my life. I have to do it and have been pretty
good so far. I want more though. Pretty good is never good enough.
I am getting better at making people stronger every day. I have
spent the last thirty years working on this goal daily. We must be careful when
we trust others. Their goals are different than ours. Someone who is working
daily to get out of poverty has a very different goal than someone who wants to
make people stronger, daily. Stay focused!
The bottom line is we must focus on one thing that we want. We
must define, clearly, what our headstone communicates. William Patrick
Dougherty made people stronger, healthier, every day of his life. This is how
my headstone will read. Other wording would include: He did not give up when he thought nobody cared about
physical prowess. He continued making people stronger when they wanted only to
take the easy path and look their best. He continued making people better when
they had poor form to the point of injury all to be a part of a “tribe”. Make yourself
better and keep making yourself and everyone around you better. “Haters hate.” I
did not understand this language when I first heard it. I will never understand
hate. I do understand what people were talking about when they said this now. I
will not be able to help everyone. I will help those who want to hear and
listen. I will listen and recreate my language when someone does not understand
what I am saying. When someone does something wrong, dangerous, I will blame
the situation (not from Jersey shore, haha…). When someone does something right
I will give them credit. “Make
a positive sandwich” when correcting someone, as told to me by Leo Totten. Tell
them something they did well. Correct what they need to improve. Tell them what
they did well again. Let the information be received. Coaching can be negative.
We must correct mistakes. We must improve. Improvements are always agonizing. Remember,
life is hard. Homeostasis is a guileless adversary. Make life developmental. Get
stronger. Do not allow those who do not understand concern you. Stay true to
your goal.
Make certain you work daily on a goal. Break the goal down
into sub-goals. When a smaller short-term goal is not met correct yourself. Do not
remain so strong that you will not ask for guidance. Everyone needs guidance sooner
or later. Do everything you can, every day, to make your goal reality.
Get stronger!
