Squats

The squat

Many have taken the deadlift as the foundation of training. The deadlift is a great strength movement. In my humble opinion the squat is superior for athletes and everyone aspiring to be more athletic. Have you played a sport? Did your coach ever tell you to get into the athletic position? What does this position look like? It is a squat. Yes, a partial squat but still a squat.

Get a qualified coach and learn to squat. Do not read about it and venture out on your own. Starting Strength, by Mark Rippetoe, has some pretty good advice. His ideas on mid-back extension, and head positioning, are off the mark when it comes to executing a safe and effective squat. We all need someone to watch us and give constructive guidance. Athletes wanting to excel in their sport should squat double bodyweight.

Get a qualified coach and learn to squat. A coach not a trainer. Powerlifters are the best coaches for the squat, bench press, and deadlift. Avoid coaches with huge differences between their squat and deadlift.
